Hair Care Myths Debunked: What You Need to Know

Hair Care Myths

There are many hair care myths and misconceptions when it comes to hair care, and it can be challenging to separate fact from fiction. Check here, some of the most common hair care myths debunked and learn you what you need to know to have a healthy hair.

Myth #1: Cutting Your Hair Makes It Grow Faster

Truth: Hair growth happens at the roots, not the ends, and it grows around half an inch every month, whether we cut it or not. So trimming your hair has no effect on how quickly it grows. There are other factors that may affect hair growth, like hormones or even the weather. However, getting regular trims can prevent split ends and reduce breakage, which can make your hair look healthier and longer over time.

Myth #2: Brushing Your Hair 100 Strokes a Day Makes It Healthier

Truth: Brushing your hair excessively can cause friction and, if it’s done excessively, it may damage the hair, specially if it’s thin, damaged or fragile. But, brushing the hair has its benefits, when done properly: gentle and not often. It will improve microcirculation and allow an even distribution of the natural hair oils from the roots to the ends.

Myth #3: Frequent Hair Washing Helps Fight Dandruff

Truth: Absolutely! Washing your scalp with the adequate shampoo will help to remove the scaly skin and excessive sebum! It will also help reduce bacteria that causes dandruff!

Myth #4: Using Heat Styling Tools on Your Hair is Always Damaging

Truth: Hot tools are not always damaging to your hair. While excessive heat can damage your hair, it is possible to use heat styling hot tools in a safe and effective way. Always use a heat protectant spray before using hot tools, and opt for tools with adjustable heat settings, so you can find the right temperature for your hair type.

Myth #5: Washing Your Hair Every Day is Necessary

Truth: Washing your hair every day can actually strip it of its natural oils, leading to dryness and damage. How often you should wash your hair depends on your hair type and personal preference. For most people, washing every other day or a few times a week is sufficient.

Myth #6: Oily or Thin Hair Should Avoid Conditioners

Truth: Oily hair is caused by excessive sebum in the scalp and, if you don’t condition your hair, it can cause your scalp to produce more oil to compensate the lack of hydration. So, definitely, using a good conditioner is an essential haircare step. Ideally, you should choose lighter conditioners, so that it provides your hair the hydration needed. Also, when applying, only do it from middle to the ends, so it doesn’t weight.

Myth #7: Using Hot Water to Wash Your Hair Can Cause Dryness and Frizz

Truth: Hot water can, indeed, dehydrate your hair, specially during winter when we tend to take hot baths! Lukewarm or cold water is better to wash your hair! Not only this will help maintain a healthy scalp, as it will also prevent the loss of proteins and other essential ingredients!

Myth #8: Hair Color May Adhere Better to Dirty Hair

Truth: Fresh hair is better to color. A clean hair will allow a more even result, better gray coverage and increased color longevity. The only exception is if you’re doing a global lightening with lightener. In that specific case, the natural oils will help protect the scalp from the lightener.

By debunking these common hair care myths, we hope to provide you with the knowledge and tools you need to achieve healthy, beautiful hair. Remember, taking care of your hair starts with understanding what it needs and what it doesn’t.
